Today is the end of an era. The NZ Art Guild will be closing the doors for good. Thank you to all of you who have taken the time to message us your kind words and support, we are sincerely grateful. We have wonderful memories of the past 7 & 1/2 years which will never be forgotten.

Here is a small selection of the hundreds of messages we have received, please feel free to add your own comments and thoughts on this blog.

It has to be acknowledged the tremendous effort that has been made by a few individuals to maintain the living breathing organism that has been the NZ Art Guild. It is important to note that although it is now closing, the long list of achievements remain as evidence of the existence of this extraordinary phenomenon. This is a time to celebrate the work of all the participants, founders, administrators, and artists alike, and to reflect on the catalogue of exciting and happy events and initiatives that we and New Zealand have enjoyed. I wish everybody well in the future, hearty thanks for your contribution, and the fellowship of artists is all the healthier in New Zealand for the existence of the NZ Art Guild. It will live on with the legacy it leaves us today. – R.E

The Guild has offered much to many. It’s been a stepping stone and a support network, it’s offered opportunities and camaraderie, it’s enabled creativity to flourish and thrive. That is all good. What very sad news!! Might I say how grateful I have been for this wonderful vehicle you created, and how sorry I am that yet another wonderful platform falls under the 'money' axe. I am very sad to hear that after all your hard work over the years and after months of negotiations you have been unsuccessful in achieving charitable trust status in order to keep the NZ Art Guild afloat. I was so saddened to hear of the news the guild cannot continue for financial reasons. I'm angry at the powers that be that couldn't cut some slack...but mostly I am sad for the people who have put their heart and soul into it. It was a fantastic idea, and the hard work by you guys will always be appreciated, has inspired me to get into my hobby more, enjoyed the works of others on the galleries... and the forum has provided some fun discussions, and some good ideas/inspiration. I thank you so much for what you have done for artists around NZ, and my best way to thank you I guess is to be inspired to continue with my art love, probably turning to facebook and the other sites recommended in your email. But despite the sadness you must feel, please take some consolation that you have helped and inspired many artists around New Zealand, and should be very proud. - M.R

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT: NZ Art Guild to permanently close Dec 23rd

Earlier this year we announced that we had restructured the NZ Art Guild into a charitable trust with a governing board. We had submitted an application to the charities commission so that we could achieve charitable status and therefore we would be eligible to apply for funding and grants in order to sustain the NZ Art Guild financially and grow it into the future.
After 7 months of discussions with the Charities Commission, last week we had our application for charitable status declined. This required an emergency board meeting and resulted in us re-examining the future of the NZ Art Guild. It has been decided with great sadness that the Guild is not a financially sustainable organisation and therefore the only option left to us is to close.

We realise that this will come as a shock to you all and we want you to understand that this decision was not made lightly. Some of you will know that the NZ Art Guild has been a true labour of love for me personally over the last 7 ½ years since it was first founded. I have made many sacrifices over this time in order to grow the Art Guild and deliver opportunities and services to artists. It was always something I believed in passionately and was determined to make it a success for artists all around NZ.
The strategic plan this year was to create a trust, appoint a board, gain donee status and apply for funding so that we could employ someone to take over from me as Executive Director in February as I am no longer able to continue in this role for personal reasons. Unfortunately, we weren’t able to achieve these goals.

This means that the NZ Art Guild will close it doors permanently at Christmas (Dec 23rd) The NZ Art Guild website will be live until the New Year and the NZ Art Guild Facebook Page, blog and twitter will remain in the interim but will not be updated.

We understand that artists who have subscribed to our database have done so for a variety of reasons and we make some suggestions below on alternative ways they can receive those services.

- Mentoring and Coaching – I will personally be available for business mentoring and life coaching under my own company Creative Business Consultants. NZ Art Guild members will get a much reduced rate for next year. These sessions will initially only be available in person in the Auckland area but later next year will be expanded to include skype and phone coaching. - Website – for artists wanting online promotion, webpages or websites we recommend www.artfind.co.nz. Alternatively Fine Art America offer a great option for only $30 USD a year (I have one of these myself – which you can check out here – http://www.sophia-elise.artistwebsites.com/)

- Support – for professional support Artists Alliance – http://www.artistsalliance.org.nz/

- Online Community – There are numerous different groups on Facebook where New Zealand artists chat about their art and share advice and experiences. One is www.facebook.com/groups/255635297785674/

- Information – We recommend all artists subscribe to the Big Idea Navigator Bulletin. This is packed full of great articles, opportunities, art awards, residencies, jobs and much more. http://www.thebigidea.co.nz/

- Exhibition opportunities – Various community Art Centres and the NZ Academy of Fine Arts are great places to be members and then you have the opportunities to participate in their exhibitions.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the wonderful volunteers who have offered their time, energy and support to the NZ Art Guild over the years. With any organization it is a team effort and I feel very blessed to have had some wonderful team members helping us over the past 7 years.

Whatever your interest in the NZ Art Guild over the years has been; Whether you are an art lover, a business, a discounter/supplier, a past member, a current member I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for all your support of the NZ Art Guild, my vision, our charity events and of course the talented New Zealand Artists.

This is a call for New Zealand artists tocontribute to "House 18''.

Painters:Artists to paint old testament bible storieson panels that will make up the inside of a building.

NZ artists to paintsomething like "David and Goliath","Adam and eve","moses parting the sea", "baby moses in the bulrushes","Josuha bringing down the walls at Jericho", "singing a song bythe rivers of Babylon" or the hundreds of other bible stories).

To contribute to this you'll need to paintyour piece on a 1200mm x 900mm 9mm MDF panel (available from mitre10 and otherbuilding supplies stores) and remember to use portrait layout (taller than itis wide) so it fits into the finished building.

You'll have until the end of January tocourier the finished piece to Auckland, but since places are limited pleaseadvise be ASAP if you are going to contribute.

Richard Leonard, photographer, and Sally Blyth, artist & mask-maker, have teamed up to create an exhibition that will be a feast for the eyes. Presented in a variety of media, the images & creations will intrigue and captivate you. Thanks to World Rugby (not that anyone is complaining as long as the AB’s win!), there will be two exhibition “openings” & more than usual opportunities to meet the artists (see schedule above).

As a photographer, Richard is pushing the boundaries of his craft, using the human form as living canvas. He shies away from being called an ‘artist’, but some of his works draw on his art education, touching on the language of cubism and modernism. Layering images of body art on top of body painting, using light not computer trickery, you will be challenged, then fully engaged. This is a unique technique, never before seen in New Zealand.

Trained as an architect in London & with a career in advertising & publishing, Richard has returned to his passion fulltime, drawing on his creative roots and his years of travelling for ideas. Working with talented body artists has broadened the scope of his inspirational photography.

Sally presents a range of her work exploring the adornment of the body & soul. Her exquisite masks can be examined up close & enjoyed as captured by Richard's camera. Using canvases and other more unusual backgrounds, Sally expands the concepts of decoration and style, wrapping the human form in elegant simplicity. As a 2011 WOW double finalist, Sally's exquisite garments have been wow'ing audiences in Wellington & her captivating skill will now be on display in Devonport.

Sally has always had a creative streak since childhood, but a professional career lured her to work with not-forprofit organizations near & far. Learning & developing her artistic style through her own observation, research and experimentation during her adult years, Sally now happily focuses on her creative passions full-time. Hi everyone,

It's finally happened, the books are on the market.

When Karen's mother, the Holocaust survivor and writer-in-exile, Elisabeth Augustin, passed away, she left us a vast number of manuscripts. Manuscripts of her novels and radio plays, and also of many hundreds of poems, both published and still unpublished ones. I really love her work, and to my surprise, she liked mine too. Soooo:

As a Holocaust survivor myself I felt privileged being able to translate some 80 of her poems from the original German and Dutch into English. I selected poems from her entire career, from her first published poem at age 18, to work she wrote when she was 96. A 'tri-lingual biographically oriented compilation: 'languageland'.

Unfortunately the publisher who was interested in publishing it had gone bankrupt in the meantime, so I have had the work printed by a commercial printer and will do the marketing myself.

I also gave in to pressure from family and friends to write my memoirs 'Like a Guardian'.

Because of the large number of colour illustrations 'Like a Guardian' is too expensive to have printed commercially, so I print and bind it myself, glued and sewn.

Both books are now available at $45 per (signed) copy, inclusive postage within NZ.

Volunteers required - Kumeu Art in the Garden 2011

The NZ Art Guild is seeking expressions of interest from Volunteers who would like to assist with the Kumeu Art in the Garden Festival 2011 which is to be held on 29th and 30th of October in Auckland. This is a fantastic event which combines award winning private gardens, with artworks from over 60 artists, music and food. All the funds raised from this event are donated back to charities within the local community.

We are looking for people to help on Saturday 29th October (7:45am - 4:30pm) or Sunday 30th (8:45am - 4pm) October or maybe even both days? Alternatively if you are available for even half a day that would be great!

Volunteers would be working with an NZ Art Guild management team member and would help with

1) guiding, directing and assisting artists with setting up,
2) manning the sales table during the day and taking and recording payments,
3) answering some public queries,
4) relieving artists at their stands while they get refreshments or go to the toilet,
5) supervising and assisting with packing up at the end of the day.

Request on behalf of the Kennedy Park WWII Military Installations Preservation Trust

Introduction

The Kennedy Park WWII Military installations preservation trust is a Registered Charity formed to preserve the World War II defensive installation built at Castor Bay in what is now known as the JF Kennedy Memorial Park.

Our aim is to not only restore and preserve the gun emplacements, tunnel complex and other structures in the park but also to honour the men and women who served in the defence of New Zealand. It is our intention to mount a plaque honouring the members of the 63rd battery, 9th Heavy (Coast) Regiment who were based at Castor Bay.

Among the artefacts collected on site is a large steel door that was rescued from the sea, adjacent to one of the searchlight emplacements built into the cliff. Rusted, scarred and interesting, this object lends itself to being suitably mounted near the gun emplacements and becoming part of the plaque, or be the actual plaque.

Size: 1.34m high by 1.52m wide. The protrusion is 53cm, but I guess this should be cut off.

We are open to suggestions as to how to use this beastie (It takes four me to lift it) but have considered three options:

1 Engrave directly on to the steel plate. Cutting it to plaque shape may involve heavy engineering!

2. Make a sculpture out of the steel door, and incorporate a stainless steel plaque (manufactured by a trophy maker) into the design

3. Something else that my non-artistic mind is as yet unable to determine.

I believe the second option will be the simpler to achieve.

Our request
We would like to talk to an artist who would enjoy looking at the site, designing suitable placing and mounting and incorporating the plaque utilising the Artillery logo. We will organise the labour, attend to resource consent etc. and will carry our rust-inhibiting procedure as soon as the final design is known.

Please note that we are not flush with money and may need to pursue sponsorship for this exercise although we have had a $500.00 grant from Veterans Affairs towards the plaque.

Kumeu Art in the Garden Festival 2011 is taking place on October 29th and 30th in four award winning private gardens. This event is now in its 3rd year and has seen thousands of visitors enjoying Kumeu’s top gardens filled with artists and their creations. There will be over sixty artists from around New Zealand exhibiting and selling their work which includes paintings, sculpture, mosaics, photography, jewellery, glass art and much more.

Kumeu Art in the Garden 2011

On Saturday 29th and Sunday 30th of October, four of Kumeu’s stunning, award winning gardens will be showcasing art from the best of the region’s artists and sculptors. Almost eighty artists will be showcasing art for sale over 1000 works of art in four fabulous garden galleries.

This charity event celebrates the blending of art and culture, in four outstanding garden galleries, some of which are being opened to the public for the very first time.

The ticket cost is $20 (or $15 early bird to October 2) for the full, two day event. Gate sales are not guaranteed due to limited ticket numbers (due to parking and road control) we strongly urge you to book early to avoid disappointment.

Kumeu Art in the Garden raises funds for charity. The beneficiaries will be Rotary Kumeu, with proceeds split between a range of local community charity groups. Organisers are hoping to raise over $15,000 through ticket sales.

Music in every garden
A number of young local musicians have been selected to perform at each garden around lunch time. The schools supporting the event including Kaipara College and Massey High School. In addition the local big band is performing to provide a spectacle and some good cheer in support of the event.

Food and beverage
In every garden community charity groups will be busy serving up a storm. From beverages to hot scones and treats, including morning and afternoon teas and lunch. Take some money and shout yourself a hot cuppa and treat as it all goes to local groups that all have worthwhile local projects that they need funds for.

How to get involved:
Create an artwork inspired by the theme or images provided before 5pm (NZ time) on the due date. You may use any media you like to create your artwork.

Images of your finished works can be submitted via the wall of our facebook fanpage - remember to include the challenge number in the description of your image along with the following details: artist name, artwork title, medium, size, date of completion and your website address (if you have one). Or email your images to tanya@nzartguild.co.nz with the above details.

NZ Art Guild members (ie those who pay subscriptions) are required to submit their works on the members only forum if they wish to be included in the voting for Members Choice and Most Creative. Only NZ Art Guild members artworks will be up for voting.

Entries will be displayed on this blog after the challenge has closed with links to artists websites (where they are provided), along with the results of the members vote.

Artworks MUST be created between the time the challenge is announed and the due date. Please do not submit works created prior to the challenge announcement (21/9/2011), if the NZ Art Guild management team feel this has occured they reserve the right to remove the images at their discression.

"Taking the plunge" - An exhibition by NZ Art Guild Member Jane Tan

Well-known artist releases exhibition at Franklin’s new art gallery

September 19th 2011: Recently opened ‘Art-rageous Gallery and Gifts’ is proudly owned by well known Kiwi artists, Jane Tan, Helen Parsons, Yvonne Small and Elise Smith. From September 29th until November 5th Jane Tan’s exhibition “Taking the Plunge” is on show for all to view at Artrageous Gallery and Gifts, 5 Mauku Road, in the small town of Patumahoe, Franklin.

“Taking the Plunge” is a powerful and eclectic collection which will inspire the greenie within, with its inherent sustainable agenda flowing naturally throughout the pieces through a strong use of the “found object”. As well the collection covers themes of migration, relevant to the multi-cultural society we belong to in Aotearoa. In exploring the process of migration “Taking the Plunge” talks of taking chances, risks and opportunities synonymous with the pursuit of a new life, and change. Not only depicting the physical migratory journey, the collection describes a deeper, spiritual journey touching on themes around endurance and perseverance, dreams and inspirations and the decisions which lead us down life paths.

Scotland born, NZ immigrant Jane Tan has a passion for incorporating a sustainable thread through her pieces with her work strongly featuring the use of the ‘found object’- transforming used or unwanted items into an art-form. A strong Tan piece showcases a discarded oar, turned into a powerful art-work embedded with emotion and depth. A strong symbol of “endeavor, fortitude, and propulsion, moving forward even if it is against the flow.”

A veteran of ‘up-cycling’ Jane explains, “I like to fossick around in second hand shops in my local area or use trademe (to source pre-loved items). Sometimes I already have a plan and go out searching, other occasions I come across something I purchase to take it home and contemplate what can be done with it.”

Ever the ‘up-cycler’ of old and cherished items, Jane continues, “In the past I have used old doors, waterskis, oars, wooden plates, vintage shoe lasts. I also like to make use of collage and old postcards, quotations, and poetry, which are a great source of inspiration. For me the object should always relate to what I am trying to say. As an example my vintage children’s shoe sculpture are conveyed with poetry and messages to children. “Follow your Dreams”, “Walk ahead, I am always with you”, “I have spread my dreams beneath your feet”. I create for myself but I always like the concept that anyone who purchases my work will connect with it with their own interpretation.”

Art-rageous Gallery and Gifts is located on Mauku Road, Patumahoe Village, Franklin, and is open Tuesday-Sunday from 10.30am until 4pm. Jane Tan’s exhibition “Taking the Plunge” runs from September 29th until November 5th 2011.

BIGGEST EVER CONTEMPORARY MAORI ARTS GATHERING AND EXHIBITION

The biggest ever showing of contemporary Maori art from more than 200 Maori painters, clay and glass workers, carvers, jewellers, ta moko, musicians, story-tellers and film-makers goes on display at the biennial MAORI ART MARKet at Te Rauparaha Arena in Porirua City from October 6-9.

As part of the REAL New Zealand Festival running alongside the Rugby World Cup, an influx of tens of thousands of international rugby tourists is expected during the event, which will provide an opportunity to showcase Maori culture through contemporary Maori art, and enable visitors to talk to the artists and buy affordable and genuine Maori items to take home as mementos.

MAORI ART MARKet will start at 6.30pm on 4 October 2011 with a formal welcome at Pataka Museum for artists Bunmei Okabe from Japan, Grahame Sydney the New Zealand invited artist, and Contemporary Maori artists Beverly Rhodes, Maria Brockhill, Barry Te Whatu, Norm Heke, Regan Balzer and Tanu Aumua.

"Beyond Words" an exhibition by NZ Art Guild Member Sharlene Schmidt

After 3 International Residencies and Exhibitions, and a multitude of National group and solo events, Sharlene is ready to show at the Academy of Fine Arts. She brings here for the first time a solo show based on the international language of music and emotion.

Throughout Sharlene’s excursions to Italy, India and Albania her work involving music became the one language that anchored her, going “Beyond Words” to stimulate communications.

Sharlene’s series of Oils looks at moments within sounds that create emotional responses. All art starts with a moment, a moment of happiness, fear, sorrow or anger, it is portrayed through sound, dance, movement, and visual concepts, though each of us may form a different interpretation, the moment of truth is in the glimpse of realisation, that being human we understand sound on an emotional level.

From Opera through to Heavy metal, around the world from the poorest singing on the street to the riches of theatres and concerts, we all have listened with our ears and eyes to some form of music. Sharlene explores the art form within the Art, where did it start? Where was it going? Or was it simply an analogy in the first place?

Sharlene’s intention is to generate discussion around the sentiment portrayed in each work, a harmony through vision rather than sound.

A provocative exhibition by a Japanese artist looks at the nature of truth and art against the backdrop of a crumbling family relationship.

Unprepared to deal with the magnitude of the controversial exhibition, the gallery that commissioned the work struggle to maintain control over the public and the Artist, as a series of personal and PR blows threaten to close it down for good.

And it is soon exposed even the Artist no longer has control.

Can you tell us about yourself and your art?
There was nothing luxurious during the time I spent in my youth. I thought that was not very bad for my life as Albert Camus said that he had learned about freedom not from Marks, but from poverty.
I would say at the end of my life, 'Money couldn't occupy both my mind and thought, and I've been keeping freedom of expression in return for a financial affluence'.
I personally believe people should appreciate "artwork" without knowing any details on who made it, but only from artwork itself.
It's uneasy for me to accept the fact that people are easy to be swayed by their background and by the "name value" and artworks are not to be evaluated by their artwork itself.
So I hope people see my work itself and feel something with their sense.

I occasionally make something for protesting against the power of abusing human rights because this is the most important matter for me however the work is not beauteous at all.

What is it you love about art?
It's hard to express my feelings just with words so art is the only way to reflect my mind and thoughts.

What is one of the hardest things about being an artist?
Mostly it's very hard for stained glass artists to get enough remuneration for fabrication cost. All materials we need to use such as glass, copper foil, lead came, solder, etc. are terribly expensive but it's a small thing compared to the long working hours. We need a lot of time from designing to finishing and it'll reflect on the price but many imported stained glass products are in the market nowadays and these are incredibly cheap (hard to vie with them in price). However the quality of the glass used and finishing techniques are obviously different, these are beyond imagination to people who doesn't know the process of making stained glass. So one of the hardest things about being a stained glass artist is foster better understanding about our work to the public.

Personally, the hardest thing is caused by limited supply of materials especially glass, the main item of my work. It doesn't always work when the supply is limited. So I have to adjust my design to the existent glass colour and or patterns.
What is the easiest part of being an artist?
No need to be controlled by alarm clock.

What are your goals as an artist?
I haven't set my goals because there are infinite possibilities.

Can you tell us about your experience with being a member of the NZ Art Guild?
I've got several offers from some art galleries to exhibit my works and offer from publishers of art books probably because I'm a member of the NZ Art Guild. Of course I have experienced much more great things from being a member of the guild. The best experience is receiving hearty welcome and extremely kind supports from them. Thanks for all members cheering me up from time to time.

An exhibition of quirky and iconic paintings by acclaimed artist/author Helen Parsons will be on show in August at Terrace Downs Resort.

The very clever and extraordinary range of works from Helen, will open at Terrace Downs Resort on Friday 5th August 2011.

The title of the exhibition “Fauna-cation!”, was inspired by Helen’s love of wordplays and is typical of her work which is often parable-like with many messages, some obvious and some not obvious, with strong themes of preservation of New Zealand’s native Flora & Fauna.

Helen delivers her message in the form of bold and vibrant colours, often with a twist of humour added.

Helen is an award-winning, self-taught artist and resides in Clarks Beach, South/West of Auckland with her husband and four children.

She has an impressive biography as an artist and is the recipient of numerous national awards, including the KG Fraser Award for the most outstanding painting at the Royal Easter Show in 2005. Her works are very sought after and popular, as they resonate who we are as kiwis.

Helen has also been widely published in various magazines including a two-page article published about her art in Her Magazine in 2009, and a two page spread in Best of Artists, Worldwide Watermedia, vol II in the USA.

The exhibition opening night which includes meeting with the artist in person and a creative fine dining menu with an asian kiwi fusion; an event that is fast becoming a popular occasion for everyone.

The exhibition will be opened by Rachael Inch, Arts Director, on Friday 5th August at 6:30pm. The exhibition will be open to the public, until 01st September.

Terrace Downs offers a special menu and Accommodation package as part of the exhibition experience.

Artists collaborate to raise funds for disadvantaged NZ kids

A group of artists nationwide has collaborated their works into one giant piece for charity to be unveiled at the Mairangi Art Centre in Auckland on July 26.

The collection of 56 art works by the New Zealand Art Guild artists, titled Light of My Life, will raise funds for KidsCan, a national charitable trust supporting disadvantaged Kiwi kids.

The combined Light of My Life will be exhibited from July 26 to August 6. It will be auctioned on Trademe from July 27 with 100 percent of the proceeds donated to the KidsCan trust. Also 100 limited edition prints of the artwork will be available with a percentage of the proceeds going to KidsCan. The artwork will be under NZ Art Guild on Trademe.

All 56 individual artworks will be combined to create an overall large artwork piece measuring 1.3 metres by 1.15 metres. The exact image of the collaborative artwork will be kept secret, even from those participating in it, until unveiling night.

KidsCan is dedicated to eliminating poverty by helping meet the physical and nutritional needs of disadvantaged NZ children, so they can reach their full potential in life.

New Zealand Art Guild executive director Sophia Elise said she was excited to be helping with KidsCan with the project.

"We appreciate the support and generosity we have received from our guild members over the past six years with these annual collaborative charity fundraisers. KidsCan rely heavily on donations to do their amazing work and our members are thrilled to get behind such a worthwhile charity.”

NZ Art Guild Member Victoria Anderson was stoked on Tuesday 28th June when she won the Painting prize for oils and acrylics, at the Mairangi Arts Centre’s annual Students and Members Exhibition.

Also awarded with a merit that night was NZ Art Guild Member and Print maker Tutor Lisz Bodsworth, who originally went along to support her students, she was thrilled with the merit award for her Mezzotint print, "Bubbles" a process that took over 20 hours to achieve.

Artists Collaborate to Raise Funds for KidsCan

Coordinated by the NZ Art Guild the collaborative project titled ‘Light of My Life’ will be unveiled on Tuesday July 26th. This one of a kind artwork is compiled from 56 individual artworks created by NZ artists who were provided with a small, wooden panel with a prepainted background colour. The theme of each of these artworks is “Our Future” and interpretation was left entirely up to the artists.

When all of these individual artworks are combined they create an overall image and a stunning one of a kind artwork measuring 1.3m x 1.15m. The overall image of the collaborative artwork is kept secret, even from those participating in it, until the unveiling night.

"We are really excited to be working with KidsCan on such an amazing project," says Sophia Elise, Executive Director of the NZ Art Guild. “We are truly appreciative of the support and generosity we have received from Guild members over the past 6 years with these fundraisers. KidsCan rely heavily on donations to do their amazing work and our members are thrilled to get behind such a worthwhile charity.”

Not only will “Light of My Life” be exhibited at this event, there will also be over 100 fantastic artworks exhibited including paintings, photography, jewellery, glass art and much more. ‘Our Future’ opens on 26 July at 5pm at the Mairangi Arts Centre, Mairangi Bay, Auckland, entry is free and everyone is welcome. Unveiling take place at 6pm.

“Light of My Life” will be exhibited from July 26th until August 6th. It will be auctioned on Trademe from July 27th with 100% of the proceeds donated to the KidsCan Charitable Trust. 100 limited edition prints of this artwork will also be available for purchase with a % of the proceeds being donated to KidsCan. NZ Art Guild June Featured Member ~ Leo Cappel

Let me introduce myself, Leo Cappèl.
I was born in Amsterdam, in 1933. I survived the war by hiding in a small village in Friesland. Afterwards, to recuperate, the Red Cross sent me to Switzerland, to live with foster parents. I am a graduate of the Rietveld Art Academy in Amsterdam, and studied art in Paris as well. Living in different countries and having to speak several languages had a profound effect on my personality and, I guess, on my art.

I can't help being an artist, but for me art means painting, and also sculpting, writing - novels, short stories, plays - and finally music. All are interwoven: when I am sculpting I tell a story. When I write a short story I paint a picture with words. When I build a musical instrument, I sculpt not only the object, but also the sound it has to produce. When I write the music for one of my musicals the lyrics are part of the plot, and the melody tells about the singer, about the person I have created. And in many of my paintings the rhythmical patterns of music can be recognized.

And that is where the NZ Art Guild comes in. Years ago I tried to join the Arts Council. 'You sculpt too, don't you?' they asked. 'Yes.' 'Then you better try the craft council. Sculpting is not ART, just craft.' Such ignorance! By now some of their administrators are beginning to catch up, but they still put the various arts into separate compartments. Little boxes. Not so the NZ Art Guild, no tunnel-vision there! When I wanted to exhibit two of my painting-sculpting combinations in Wellington, they went out of their way to help me and make it possible. In their newsletter they listed a play wrighting competition! (yes, that is the correct spelling, you don't write a play, you wright it) Thank you NZ Art Guild! I entered a 75 minute play. The results won't be known till November, keep your fingers crossed for me.

The cast of my musical 'PAPAGENINA'S FLUTE', produced by the Northland Youth Theatre. My three art forms: the costumes, the set and movements on the stage satisfied me as a visual artist, the way my black-and-white scribbles on paper turned into real people on the stage made the writer in me happy, and hearing for the first time the songs and the interlude music I had written, was very, very moving for me as musician.

I married a young lady, Karen, who was just as interested in music as I was. She had studied at the Amsterdam Conservatory, so music was one of the several things we had in common. We have now been happily married for 54 years.

Much of our music is centered around the instruments I have built, like this lyre. I considered my instruments as sculptural items

After we immigrated to New Zealand I made small dioramas at the Canterbury Museum and later the large dioramas in the Auckland War Memorial Museum. For 22 years!!!

What I consider as one of my major 'creations' was the yacht Claes Compaen, which I designed myself, and, with the help of our family, built in Auckland. To me she was a living sculpture. Our treasured home for 16 yrs

Our main sources of income during our sailing and live-aboard days were sculpting; building and selling early musical instruments; giving concerts and writing. In that order. Don't try and pigeon-hole me though, it won't work.
Most of my sculpting I could do 'down below' in our large main cabin, but bigger work had to be done on the aft deck. Much of my work was intended as a social comment.

When someone saw this sculpture at a solo exhibition one of the visitors whispered: 'How the hell did he know how I feel?' And a few moments later she sighed: 'At least somebody understands.'

I felt the need to get away from the surface, away from the solid looking bronzes I did earlier on. I tried ferro-cement and open mesh, and our large deck was ideal for that work. But I also developed combinations of mesh-sculpting and oil painting, 'paintures'. More satisfying.

Now we are landlubbers once again, quick a shock after 16 years aboard followed by 10 years on tiny Kawau Island. Still trying to balance my three art forms, the last few weeks I have been printing two more books (my memoirs - talked into it - and an anthology of poems which I translated into English), while a mesh sculpture and a large painture are waiting to be finished.

‘Strangely Familiar’ Images Represent an Iconic New Zealand at Terrace Downs Resort.

New Zealand Art Guild Member Natasha Shackleton has been passionate about art and creativity her entire life, for as long as she can remember she has been excelling in artistic fields throughout life. Her art is well known and has gained popularity over the years particularly through online sales.

Her works symbolize iconic “kiwiana” images and offer a fresh perspective of the world around us. Natasha is very competent and successful in accomplishing any commission or painting that is required of her, this is due to her training and her ongoing employment in the design field.
Natasha is member of the NZ Art Guild and currently residing in the South Island, her formal training is in graphic design and her current career as a custom tattoo artist means that she can bring a unique and special flair to New Zealand Contemporary Art.
Her artistic diversity means that she can work with nearly any medium, from acrylic paint to photorealism style coloured pencil drawings, she is competent with any subject from landscapes to vehicles & cartoon to realism.

Natasha is recognized for her "Moonlight Bay" series, her distinctive kiwiana works, and her realistic portrait paintings. Her art is easily recognizable for her use of dynamic tones, vivid colour, great lighting and strong contrasts.

Natasha is an artist with that has her heart in the right place who lives and breathes art in her every day life. She is an easily approachable individual and this personality is very much portrayed in her artwork. It is for this exact reason that Natasha’s art is so popular and sort after by so many people.

Curator for the show, Rachael Inch comments “Natasha creates works that everyone can enjoy. After the first earthquake in September 2010, she exhibited with the NZ Art Guild at South City. Her works proved the most popular as all the customers mentioned that her art made them happy and feel good about what they had been through. One man had lost everything and biked to the exhibition with all his belongings (a backpack of clothes) he bought two of her works on the spot, first art work he had ever purchased!

Natasha produces works that are priced well so there is an opportunity for anyone to invest in them as she climbs the ladder of success and this is certainly a collection of works that shouldn’t be missed while they are in the district!”

The opening evening is on Thursday 7th July 2011 starting at 6:30pm seated for dinner at 7pm and will be a relaxed and fun filled evening with entertainment, good food and great company.

Marimba Powley

Can you tell me about yourself and your art?
Marimba Powley is an artist who enjoys creating both paintings and sculptures. She grew up in a semi-rural town north of Auckland and now lives in Southland with her partner, three daughters, two dogs and Elijah the cat.
“I’ve been creating in one form or another for as long as I can remember. Art has always played a very central role in my life. Each series I work on is a journey, I just have no idea where it’s going until I get there. I often work with several concepts in various mediums side by side, one idea gliding into the next”
“The wire figures I am working on are helping me to explore body language. I’m not so fussed about working the finer details of the figures – hands, face etc. I don’t want the viewers to get caught up looking for answers in the work that come from the more obvious places. I am intent on exploring the emotions that are displayed through body movements. I have a tendency to become very familiar with each piece; they take on personalities and each has a definite character.”

What is it you love about art?
“Art for me is like the last piece of my own personal puzzle. I use my own work to explore the world around me. The creative processes allow me an opportunity to understand myself and the people around me.”
“When viewing artworks by other artists, I like to be challenged. The most interesting works for me are the ones that create conversations. I may not like what the artist is saying but if a piece makes me think or feel I appreciate it and the work is then successful in my eyes.”

What is one of the hardest things about being an artist?
“One of the most difficult aspects of being an artist is trying to explain what I do and why. If I was particularly skilled with the written word perhaps I would be a novelist rather than a visual artist.”

What is the easiest part of being an artist?
“The easiest part is most definitely the fact that I can follow my crazy plans as and when I get them. I can let loose that big kid inside and simply play with stuff. Some of my favourite work has come from an urge to just make something with whatever is in front of me at the time.”

What are your goals as an artist?
“My ultimate goal as an artist is to continue growing; to never become stagnant in my work. I would like to be able to look back in years to come and know that at some point I have created opportunities for discussion.”
“I have no particular aspirations as far as “recognition” for what I do. I do what I do for me and it’s just a bonus to be able to share that with people. If I can continue to do what I love day in and day out for the rest of my life, I’ll be a very happy lady! Who could ask for more from life than that?”

Can you tell us about your experience with being a member of the NZ Art Guild?
“I’ve been a member of the NZ Art Guild for nearly three years now. In that time I have been given the support and encouragement to grow artistically and at the same time, I’ve met amazing people from all around the country. I have been given many opportunities which have been very beneficial to my professional career.

LETTER OF INTRODUCTION FROM THE CHAIR - BRENDON LABY

My passion for the arts stems from my wife's flourishing career as a pure abstract artist, and the resulting immersion in the art world. As a result, I have become an investment buyer of collectable art and sculpture and like to think that I have developed a keen eye for quality work.

Years ago, as an artist starting out on her career, my wife Angela, would paint for the love of painting, and because she developed a unique style which found favour with those who saw and purchased her work. Over time, it became apparent however, that she lacked a direction in respect to where her career could or should go. By chance, it was at this time, that we met Sophia Elise, and with the support and tools offered by the NZ Art Guild, the rest, as they say is history!

Angela has gone on to be a multi-award winning artist, known throughout the art world, and sought after by buyers. Much of her success is directly attributable to her active involvement with the NZ Art Guild. She has received invaluable advice, resources, opportunities and friendship from the Guild and its members. It is an incredibly constructive and supportive environment which has allowed her to challenge and be challenged to extend herself to be all she can be creatively. Frankly, I do not believe that we could have got her to where she now is in her career without the support and assistance provided by the NZ Art Guild.

When the opportunity came along for me to be involved in the next stage of the NZ Art Guild's development, I jumped at the opportunity, and am excited to be able to offer something back to the very organisation which has had such a profound impact on my wife's career and on our lives.

OPEN LETTER TO NZ ART GUILD FRIENDS AND ASSOCIATES

Greetings All,

We are about to launch a new era for the NZ Art Guild.

You have shown interest in some aspect of the work of the NZ Art Guild and the networks it encompasses; most probably its online presence and its member’s exhibitions. Through that contact you may be aware that the NZ Art Guild has been forged out of the vision of a small core team of volunteers, led by Sophia Elise. What has been achieved in the seven years of its existence is truly remarkable and your interest is testament to that.

However, there comes a time when a volunteer network has to evolve into something more sustainable. The art is in doing that without any loss of the integrity and philosophy of the existing organisation.

To support the change to a more sustainable structure, a trust [The New Zealand Art Guild Charitable Trust] has been set up to nurture the NZ Art Guild and to provide a pathway to a secure funding future through public funding, corporate sponsorship and appropriate business development. The trustees are inspired by what has already been achieved and bring new energy to supporting your organisation.

The five trustees bring expertise and knowledge in the areas of fine arts, community arts, intellectual property, law, accounting, business strategy and trust and charity management. They are Brendon Laby [Chair], Lorraine Owens [Deputy Chair], Richard McGill, Dr Bruce Bryant and Geneva Gibson. To read more about them please see the following blog post.
So what does that mean for the wider arts community?

Firstly, it means no change in the delivery of the service to members and the extended network of interested parties such as yourself.

The people managing the organisation with will not change; Sophia Elise will continue in the role of Executive Director supported by Tanya Dann, Sharlene Schmidt, Christine Dempster, Marimba Powley and John Boylan.
NZ Art Guild will continue to provide members with:
• The online gallery which supports and promotes the work of member artists
• The forum which gives members an online voice and discussion space
• Members exhibitions and opportunities
• Advice on arts matters and networks to other key programmes and sites
• Discounts to members on arts related services

NZ Art Guild will continue to provide the wider arts sector with:
• Project management of art events such as charity auctions and exhibitions
• Co-Managing the Kumeu Art in the Garden Festival
• Art Hire for venues and events
• Sourcing artworks for events and commissions
• Advice and support on arts matters

Over time you can expect to see an improved web site, the development of new mentoring programmes, partnerships with other like minded arts organisations and an increased membership base which will enliven and stimulate the dialogue that is currently enjoyed. The possibility of international partnerships is also part of the longer term plan.

You may wish to continue with the level of connection you currently maintain. However, the future strength of the NZ Arts Guild will lie, in part, with its ability to provide relevant and cutting edge services to the arts community and to grow its membership around those services. You can make a significant contribution to the future of this organisation by either becoming a member and/or promoting it to other artists in your communities.

For some of you there may be an option to align with us as a sponsor or through a donorship programme. [The trust is currently applying for to the Charities Commission for Charitable Status which means all donations will be tax deductible.] A larger membership base from a wide range of sources means greater financial security for the NZ Art Guild. It means simply that the current volunteers can be paid for the tireless work that they do on behalf of our arts sector.

One Good Deed joins with NZ Art Guild

Exciting News for the NZ Art Guild

The NZ Art Guild is very excited to announce a new collaboration with the fundraising organisation - One Good Deed (OGD).

One Good Deed was started in January as a way for artists to support each others dreams through fundraising. A group of artists, spread throughout New Zealand, joined together to raise funds for a fellow artist to attend an artists residency in India in March. OGD's vision is simple - to assist their peers to follow their artistic dreams and achieve their creative goals. OGD is simply put - a group of artists working together to support artists.

We fully support and embrace the vision and mission of OGD and would like to take this opportunity to welcome one of OGD’s founding members Marimba Powley to the NZ Art Guild management team. Marimba will continue to manage OGD under the NZ Art Guild. She will be responsible for art donations, communications with artists and public, information updates, promotion as well as working closely with the team at NZ Art Guild to create fundraising opportunities for future nominees.

In the near future you will see OGD on the NZ Art Guild website, blog, Facebook page, twitter and members forum.

For those of you who participated in OGD's inaugural project (fundraising for Sharlene Schmidt) we would like to thank you again for the help and support and invite you to take part in the future of OGD. We welcome your input, whether you choose to participate by donating an artwork, donating funds, nominating a new project (including one of your own), helping promote the next initiative or purchasing work.

Toni Dolan has won the Light, Space and Time Online Gallery monthly themed competition for the month of March. Toni took out the Animals themed challenge with her wonderful piece entitled "Big Red"

Marimba Powley has been selected to be one of the 7 Guest Artists at 2011 Southland Festival of the Arts. Marimba will be giving a wire sculpting demonstration at Anderson Park Art Gallery, 91 McIvor Road, Invercargill, Sunday 8th May from 2-4.30pm

Lauryne Hart - is one of 7 artists invited as guest artists for the Ashburton Society of Arts 47th Annual Exhibition. The exhibition will be held at the Ashburton Art Gallery, Baring Square East - 20 June - 08 July.

Antonia Luz Ines won the national "Environmental Photography Challenge" run by the Waitakiruru Sculpture Park for her photograph entitled "Glacial Landscape". She had a great article about her piece in the Hamilton Press.

Workshops

Workshops available by NZ Art Guild Member Olivier Duhamel, Fabulous opportunity for anyone wanting to learn Bronze Casting.

Course outline: This 5 days workshop teaches the lost wax technique and will have you cast your own small fist sized bronze sculpture.

The workshop is suitable for professional sculptors and hobbyist or as an elective for art students.

Acrylic Adventures: Gels, Pastes, Mediums, Paints, Skins and Digital Grounds - do you know their creative possibilities?

Morag Stokes is one of only 7 NZ Artist to have been trained by Golden Artist Colours Ltd to run workshops for artists using their wide acrylic range. 19 talented NZ artists come together at the Otago Art Society's Art Station Gallery, 1st floor, Dunedin Railway Station, bottom of Stuart St (below the Octagon) between the 9th - 22nd of May to showcase a stunning array of small artworks.

REFLECTIONS OF ITALY - Wellington

10 NZ artists spent time in Italy in May 2010. They were exhibiting artworks at the Legato Exhibition in commemoration of the Battle of Cassino. “Reflections of Italy” includes work by 8 of the artists who made that journey. The exhibition will be held at the NZ Academy of Fine Arts, 1 Queen's Wharf, Wellington from the 16th - 22nd May.

Thousands of sketchbooks are being exhibited at galleries and museums as they make their way on tour across the USA. After the tour, all sketchbooks will enter into the permanent collection of The Brooklyn Art Library, where they will be cataloged and available for the public to view. 28839 artists from 94 countries were sent blank sketchbooks. Painting for the stage ~ Linda Paul

NZ Art guild member Linda Paul spent the Christmas period Designing the backdrops for the successful Shakespeare play held at the Pumphouse on the North Shore, over Jan – Feb 2011. The canvas was 26ft by 7ft drop. It took Linda several days to complete, and it was a great success.

Gold Pan Art - Celebrating 150 years

It was impossible for many NZ Art Guild members to resist the opportunity to be part of a fabulous exhibition and celebration at the Tuapeka Goldfields Museum in Lawrence, New Zealand. The reason was not only that it was a celebration of 150 years since the discovery of gold in Gabriel's Gully but they also had to create their artworks on a gold pan! It was an opportunity to be innovative and to think outside the box.

There are still some of these gold pans available for purchase - but you better get in quickly as they are selling fast. They take sales over the Internet and phone so you don't even have to be there in person!

These challenges are completely voluntary. Submissions must be original and be completed during the 2 week time-frame. Participants may choose to interpret the theme in any way they wish.

NZ Art Guild and KidsCan partner up

We are excited to announce that this year we are partnering with KidsCan Charitable Trust for the 2011 Collaborative Artwork. 100% of the sale proceeds form this artwork and a percentage of each limited edition print sold will be donated to KidsCan.

KidsCan is an amazing nationwide charity that is dedicated to eliminating poverty.

Education equals opportunity! Unfortunately in New Zealand thousands of children live their lives in extreme poverty, going without the basics most of us take for granted and this has a major impact on their ability to learn so they can reach their full potential.

So what is daily life REALLY like for the more than 200,000 New Zealand children living in poverty? These are New Zealand’s forgotten children who existing a world where they cannot be sure of having three meals a day, suitable clothing and heating in their home in winter. It means getting sicker more often, shortened life expectancy, poor nutritional status and not achieving age-appropriate developmental milestones. It means missing out on school excursions and not being able to participate fully in classroom activities; which leads to social isolation, feelings of worthlessness, loneliness and alienation.

KidsCan helps meet the physical and nutritional needs of disadvantaged NZ children so they can reach their full potential in life. They have several different programmes including Food for Kids, Shoes for Kids, Raincoats for Kids, Warm Kids (providing beanies and thermal tops) and Cool Kids (providing sun hats)

KidsCan currently supports more than 41,000 kids in 201 low decile schools. The demand for their programmes is growing - they have 21,000 children still waiting for their support. By supporting KidsCan we can help reduce their waiting list and ensure no child in our country goes without the basics they need for a healthy happy life.

In April, Terrace Downs High Country Resort Terrace Downs celebrates the works from two amazing artists, Lynne Iggulden and Amy Preston. The creations will be complimented by the soulful voice of Kris Trousselot

“Rural Connections” is a fresh, exciting symphony of works that emanates the essence of rural life in New Zealand. It is an exhibition experience where you are able to dine with the artist enjoying the wonderful menu that Terrace Downs provides, all the while listening to the wonderful voice of our local and Singing Sensation, Kris Trousselot.
